Play “Backup” PS3 Games from a Hard Drive

The video above features the world’s first method of circumventing the PS3′s security to play games from a hard drive. Unlike the Xbox 360 and Wii, the PS3 has been resilient in resisting hackers’ attempts to play ripped games. The PS3 Jailbreak features a USB chip that retails for a bit over $150 but enables users to dump copies of games to their hard drives. Additionally, running the games from a hard drive will save discs from getting scratched and load games faster.

The PlayStation 3 Water Cooled Laptop

Even though Sony is having some pretty serious security issues, this water cooled PS3 laptop is still an extraordinary build.  The entire work log is available if you’re willing to take on the challenge and build one yourself.  The 16.75”x13”x3.5” case is made from aluminum and Keyboards and speakers are built in.

You could make it even smaller with the new slim PS3 but this mod uses the earlier model with the 40GB unit. The key feature is of course the water-cooling reservoir that finds space inside the portable console. The PS3 portable laptop weighs in at 15 pounds (7kgs). Slightly heavy, we would say but still a neat case mod.

The point of this pod isn’t really to save space, but for the challenge of gutting a console and rebuilding it (something Ben Heck has been doing for years).  Essentially, he just removed all of the hardware from their original cases and move them inside of a typical PC case.  You’d think cooling might be an issue, but apparently it’s well ventilated.  Check out the project gallery for more details.  Unfortunately, full build specs aren’t available.

Ben Heck’s New PS3 Laptop With HDMI Display

Ben Heck is at it again with his newest PS3 laptop.  This little beauty features a 17 inch 720p LCD screen, a pair of stereo speakers and built in headphone jack for some serious portable gaming power.  The unit also features a HDMI cable for full HDTV connectivity instead of the LCD display.

Xbox One release date announced, setting up brawl with Sony's PS4

PS4 Getty.JPGAfter years of skirmishes, Microsoft's Xbox is finally set to go head-to-head with Sony's Playstation on one of the biggest days in a gaming console's life: its release date.

Microsoft this morning announced that the Xbox One, its latest iteration of its highly successful gaming system, will hit store shelves (albeit briefly) on Nov. 22.

That's a week after Sony's Playstation 4 is released, on Nov. 15.

Such a tight release schedule — particularly before the crucial Black Friday kick-off to the holiday shopping season — bodes for an intense battle between the tech giants for consumer dollars this year.

In the past, the companies have kept their release dates apart by a year or more. But more recently they faced pressure to keep consumers interested in buying bulky and costly systems that are tethered to their TVs at a time when gamers have flocked to inexpensive mobile offerings like "Angry Birds" for Apple's iPhone or Samsung's Galaxy devices.

Microsoft's announcement today is the latest in a series of headline grabbers that started with chief executive Steve Ballmer's announcement that he will retire and continued with Tuesday's news that the PC maker is buying mobile phone maker Nokia for $7.2 billion.

The Xbox One is set to retail at $499 and will be available in 13 countries, including the U.S., on Nov. 22. The Playstation 4 will cost $399 when it launches in the U.S. on Nov. 15. It will then bow in European countries in Nov. 29.

Still, good luck finding either machine come launch date. Retailers are reporting that they have sold-out of their allotted pre-orders for Xbox One, although Microsoft says it has responded by ramping up production of the devices, Bloomberg News reports.
